#6: Stop believing it should be fair

At the beginning of my career, I would get in at 9am and leave at 5:30pm sharp. Those were the hours stated in my contract, after all. It seemed fair.

In other words, I was doing the bare minimum. Some might think it's unfair to give more because why should you give up more of your time without extra reward? I eventually learned that this is not the case.

Any time I've been to a restaurant where they give me a free dessert or a drink on the house, I leave feeling delighted and grateful. I tell people how great my experience was and that they should try it. I found the same to be true in my work.

Now, I try to find ways to provide a bit more value beyond what's asked. Going the extra mile now and again adds up, and I have found that the rewards I receive greatly outweigh the extra I have given.

Give first and give a lot.
